Odiham Cottage Hospital, Hampshire
New Transport for Day Care Centre
Odiham Cottage Hospital was faced with closure by the NHS in the late 1990s but the local community rallied round and purchased the hospital to keep it open, financing it via a charity.
The hospital works with various services run from the site such as St Michael’s Hospice, Counselling for Younger People, Talking Therapies and the Rosefield Day Care Centre.
Age Concern Hampshire run the day care centre which is open Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. The clients who attend the centre usually have support needs and some elements of dementia so this service is valuable because it offers clients’ loved ones some respite.
The centre has been designed to be a comfortable and cosy place. All clients are assured of a warm welcome from the friendly and professional staff. The centre offers a number of fun and stimulating activities for clients: crafting, music therapy, table tennis, entertainment, new age kurling, special outings and reminiscence sessions. All of the activities are devised to create a ‘jolly’ atmosphere for centre clients.
The hospital wanted to reach more people in the local area so they could access the centre and activities so they looked at obtaining their own transport.
The hospital, having suitable funds, decided to buy a wheelchair accessible minibus. Thus ensuring the ability to transport clients with varying needs to and from the day centre. Age Concern Hampshire suggested Gowrings Mobility as a supplier – they had used Gowrings for many years.
A member of the Gowrings Community Care Team initially discussed options with the hospital manager and then later visited the hospital to demonstrate a suitable vehicle.
“We are delighted to receive our Fiat Ducato minibus which we will use to
transport clients to and from our Rosefield Day Centre.
Gowrings have provided us with first class service
in specifying the bus to our requirements and assisting us at every step of the way.”
