Based in Newbury, Berkshire, Gowrings Mobility is the UK's longest established and leading company producing and supplying wheelchair accessible vehicles. We design, manufacture and market a wide range of vehicles that have been extensively converted to allow wheelchair users to travel in their wheelchairs as passengers. We set the standards. The company invented the original 'wheelchair passenger vehicle' and was the first supplier of wheelchair accessible vehicles to Motability. 40 years on, Gowrings Mobility is a highly successful business and is renowned for its customer service, quality products and professionalism.
Over the years, we have stood out for our innovative designs and high standards on quality. As the leading manufacturer and supplier of wheelchair accessible vehicles, we have continued to stay close to the real needs of our customers. Our success is rooted in our experience of working with thousands of families across the UK; our design and our customer approach have been developed based on direct feedback from users with a wide range of mobility difficulties.
Gowrings Mobility set the standards in wheelchair accessible vehicles. Beginning with the Chairman conversion of the 1960s - marketing very small numbers of the original "wheelchair passenger vehicle", based on the Austin Mini Countryman and built by sub-contract coachbuilders.
By the 1970s, production volumes had grown to 50 or so per year and the Mini had been replaced by the Austin Metro. In the early 1980s, a more sophisticated conversion with a lowered floor, short lightweight ramp and lowering suspension was introduced, providing much easier wheelchair access. Based upon the highly successful Ford Escort van, the Chairman Escort was quickly followed by other models.
Over the years, we have evolved the design of our wheelchair accessible vehicles from raised rooflines to more complex lowered floors, secure restraint systems and lightweight ramps, a much more sophisticated and discreet design.
