Gowrings Mobility doubles volumes and goes on recruitment drive
Newbury-based Gowrings Mobility, the UK’s leading supplier of wheelchair passenger vehicles, is pleased to announce that its volumes have doubled since a dramatic price change was announced, making its specially adapted Renault Kangoo the most popular and affordable vehicle for disabled people using the Motability Scheme.
Demand for these specialist vehicles has shot up and the company has undergone major restructuring and rapidly expanded to meet this increased uplift of sales. In the last few months, Gowrings Mobility has strengthened its team to more than 120 employees, making it one of the healthiest small-to-medium sized employers in Newbury.
Gowrings Mobility has been supplying and manufacturing vehicles for wheelchair access in its 25,000 sq foot factory in Newbury since the 1960s. The cars are re-engineered by removing and constructing a new, lowered floor; inserting a lightweight ramp for wheelchair access, modifying the fuel tank and exhaust system, installing new seats and seatbelts and a wheelchair securing system. This allows a wheelchair user to enter the vehicle via the ramp at the rear, and remain in their wheelchair whilst travelling safely as a passenger.
Linda Ling, Managing Director of Gowrings Mobility commented, 'Our vehicles enable disabled people get out and lead independent lives - visiting friends and families, going shopping and going out - all the things that we take for granted. Finally wheelchair users and those that need the most specialist adaptations to keep them mobile are able to get access to affordable transport.'
Gowrings Mobility is now on a further recruitment drive to maximise production outputs, looking for a large team of skilled professionals such as welders, vehicle fitters, strippers, trimmers and stores personnel including supervisory staff from the local area.
Gary Bolton joined Gowrings Mobility seven years ago and was promoted to Production Supervisor. He comments, 'The pay's good and so are the working conditions. What makes the work really interesting is that it is really varied, and that you see the car being built right from the start to finish. And my colleagues are a really friendly bunch to work with. It's a great place to work!'
